“I first consulted Mairi a year ago about my IBS as I had received no dietary guidance or referral from the colorectal consultant or my GP. I had a detailed consultation with Mairi and was delighted with the results of her advice. We successfully identified which foods were causing my long-term symptoms. Then, with the addition of yoghurt and a specific probiotic to my diet, within a few weeks, I was feeling better than I had in a long time, and I now have no IBS symptoms.
Two months ago I suffered a stroke and realised I should make further adjustments to my diet to manage my blood pressure and cholesterol levels, so I consulted Mairi again with some specific questions and for more general advice. “I have suffered from IBS for most of my life on and off and have tried many different ways of finding out what causes it and how to relieve the symptoms. Many years ago, I did an elimination diet which showed me that food was certainly a factor but didn’t really identify the culprits. Over the years I have cut various things from my diet without any real evidence. I had read about the low FODMAP diet and talked to my GP about trying it. I searched on the internet for a dietician who could help me and I found Mairi who specialises in IBS and from her website seemed to be very knowledgeable about the diet. I had a 15-minute initial conversation on the phone and immediately felt comfortable. This was followed by a consultation where she looked at my diet and advised me to begin the low FODMAP diet. I went back after six weeks and she advised me on the reintroductions. I have since had another consultation. I have found her very professional and helpful and I have emailed her a couple of times to ask questions. I don’t think I would have had the confidence to follow the diet without her help. It has certainly benefitted me and I am so pleased I found Mairi. I would highly recommend her to anyone who wants to follow the low FODMAP diet to help their symptoms. “I was failing to lose the weight I had gained in the first lockdown and before, so decided to follow the advice and find a professional to help me.
I checked out several websites for dietitians in the Cambridge area and had free consultations with several of them. I decided that I felt that I could work with Mairi to reach my weight loss goal – and I was right!
Mairi’s practical, balanced approach to weight loss enabled me to discover that I could gradually lose weight without punishing myself and being able to lead a ‘normal life’. It took me a while to get my head around having a completely balanced diet including carbs and thinking about ‘portions’ but it quickly became second nature. Mairi was available to answer my questions and give support and regular updates. I even managed to have 5 nights of dinner, bed and breakfast in a hotel and only put on 1 ½ lbs which I quickly lost!

“After many years struggling with my digestive system and really not getting much relief from prescribed medication, I decided that I was in so much discomfort and fed up of having no energy that I needed to try another path. I had been looking at articles on the internet and thought a dietician might help me. I looked at the BDA website and came across Mairi. Mairi’s website was also very informative and gave me some hope that my first consultation might be the beginning of my route to some relief. Mairi is an extremely kind and caring person. She is easy to talk to and actually understands how you are feeling. She never makes you feel rushed even though like me, I felt I had a list of things to talk through. I was able to have consultations over Skype which meant I didn’t have to travel and could easily fit them around family and work. After making the decision to try the low FODMAP diet, Mairi guided me through the wealth of food groups and information. She sent me guides, and recipes, and suggested phone apps and probiotics help. I felt supported through the whole process. I learnt an awful lot about what my body was reacting to, what to avoid and how to reintroduce foods slowly. When things weren’t going so well, she made suggestions that got me back on track. It is a few months since I finished the consultations but Mairi keeps in touch to see how I am doing. “After chatting to a family member, I realised I was accepting ‘as normal for me’ symptoms clearly related to IBS. This was when I first heard about the Low Fodmap diet backed by research from King’s College London and The Monash University Melbourne; this diet is a solution to managing IBS. I searched online for a dietician qualified in the theory and application of the diet and was fortunate to find Mairi’s service in my area.
There is free parking available, and the consulting environment is modern, spacious and quiet, the length of appointments provides ample time for consultation and discussion. Mairi understood that I wished to ease my symptoms at the same time as eating healthily and find a diet to follow for optimum health now and in the future. Mairi listens well and provides solutions to follow in written form given at the end of the consultation together with additional literature and information. This provides a valuable source to consult whilst carrying out any dietary changes advised. She welcomes contact between appointments providing advice and support if needed.

“I had been suffering with a very sore and bloated tummy for almost a year when I decided to finally get in touch with Mairi. I had tried many things including herbal remedies, medication and changing my diet – none of which gave me relief from my discomfort.

“I had been struggling to find a sustainable way to manage my weight for years and was getting tired of the constant battle with myself. I was happy to make changes but wanted a set of rules to follow that would produce long term results. A friend and colleague had recently lost weight and I asked her how she was doing it – she recommended Mairi and explained that her weight loss was due to a calorie controlled approach that combined set numbers of measured portions of the different food groups (protein, carbohydrates, fruit & veg etc.). Portion control is something I had always struggled with, so this appealed to me. Mairi was lovely and worked with me to understand my motivations for managing my weight as well as the obstacles I have to achieving weight loss – suggesting ways I could try to overcome those obstacles. She was never critical, even when I wasn’t doing very well and encouraged me to adopt a ‘lifetime change in eating habits’ so that the occasional slip could be overcome by just restarting. Mairi has given me the tools to manage my weight by setting a daily calorie limit (including a bit extra for the odd treat) and helping me to understand what a ‘portion’ is. “Mairi showed a very high standard of professional care whilst helping me to follow firstly, a low fodmap diet and then a carefully staged reintroduction of foods. The initial and subsequent consultations were all thorough & as this was during the Covid Pandemic, all the consultations were by phone or email. She combined facts with a sensible & personal plan which allowed for an enjoyment of food and to be able to eat with family. This included Christmas with tempting foods available , the slight relaxation in the summer and throughout lockdown!
During the 5 months & in our final consultation we looked at maintenance, use of seasonal foods, & early recognition & appropriate action, if symptoms restarted. I really liked her supportive approach which included humour and a consideration of my lifestyle. She also encouraged me to consider first line approaches to IBS including relaxation with yoga.
